UFC stunner: "The New York Bad Ass" Phil Baroni announces new deal with UFC

Originally posted on MMAjunkie.com

It's official: Phil Baroni, a shameless (and effective) self-promoter who's better known as "The New York Bad Ass," is returning to the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

On Thursday the 33-year-old fighter signed a new multi-fight deal with the UFC and is heading to the organization's welterweight division.

Baroni today broke the news that he signed the deal while a guest on MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio), though no date or opponent have been determined for his return to the octagon.

"I just signed and sent my contract back to the UFC," Baroni said.

Baroni (13-11 MMA, 3-5 UFC) hasn't fought in the UFC since UFC 51 in 2005, when he suffered a submission loss to Pete Sell. It was the fourth consecutive loss for Baroni, who burst onto the UFC scene in 2001 with a series of devastating knockouts and a 3-1 record.

Since he was initially released by the organization, Baroni has fought all over the world with organizations such as PRIDE, Strikeforce, ICON Sport, EliteXC, Cage Rage and Palace Fighting Championships.

Welterweight Phil Baroni released by Strikeforce; reportedly "likely" to sign with UFC

Originally posted on MMAjunkie.com

Following a June defeat at the hands of Joe Riggs, welterweight slugger Phil Baroni (13-11) was today officially released from his contract with Strikeforce.

Baroni fought just twice for the organization, compiling an 0-2 record.

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said he wasn't ruling out a future relationship with the "New York Bad Ass," providing Baroni can put together a win streak in the welterweight division.

"We wish Phil the best of luck and hope he can revive his career," Coker said. "If he can, maybe one day he can return and fight for us."

Passed on for Nick Diaz fight, Strikeforce's Phil Baroni says future will be different

Originally posted on MMAjunkie.com

Strikeforce welterweight brawler Phil Baroni (13-11) was the first person to raise his hand when the organization was in need for a replacement opponent for Nick Diaz.

It's the warrior mentality that has been a career hallmark of the "New York Bad Ass," but it wasn't enough for Showtime to allow Baroni to step in for Joe Riggs on the main card of the Aug. 15 event, "Carano vs. Cyborg."

Baroni recently told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio) he was a bit disappointed that he wasn't allowed to take the fight, and he's using that emotion to fuel his next trip to the cage.

"With Showtime, I haven't done as well as I planned for them," Baroni said. "They're not high on me, so they don't think I'm worthy of a fight with Nick."

Showtime has broadcast two of Baroni's career losses – a June decision to Joe Riggs and a June 2007 submission defeat to Frank Shamrock. But Baroni believes the potential fireworks of a matchup with Diaz should have been enough to warrant a slot on the card.

"If I would have won the fight (with Riggs), [Diaz and I] would have been fighting each other," Baroni said. "The fight was a decision. I thought I was the No. 1 guy that would definitely be able to fill in.

Phil Baroni to Sengoku

UFC and Pride veteran “The New York Bad Ass” Phil Baroni (13-11) has exclusively informed us at DemandMMA that his next fight will be for the Japanese promotion Sengoku, and it is tentatively scheduled for the September 23rd, Sengoku 10 event.

While no opponent is confirmed, Baroni believes he will be facing Pride veteran Makoto Takimoto (5-5). Takimoto, though posting a .500 record, has faced unbelievably stiff competition in his relatively short career, facing the likes of Frank Trigg, Zelg Galesic, Gegard Mousasi, Evangelista Santos, among others. Takimoto’s most impressive win came at Yarennoka 2007 when he earned a split decision victory over former UFC middleweight champion, Murilo Bustamante.

Baroni on Bisping: "Better Than I Thought"

Originally posted on Sherdog.com

When you think of team players, does Phil Baroni’s name come to mind? Well, it should.

Hearing that Michael Bisping’s training camp was forming in Las Vegas in anticipation of his featured middleweight bout with Dan Henderson at UFC 100, the outspoken “New York Bad Ass” requested a spot on the squad.

The first one laced and padded up, Baroni was a constant man in motion Monday night at the Tapout gym, where the team congregated for its evening session. Baroni, Josh Hall, Mario Neto and Zach Light all rotated in on Bisping with sparring for five-minute intervals to keep the Brit on his toes.

Baroni, a veteran of many a dogfight in the sport’s history, has been impressed with what he’s seen.

“The guy’s a lot better than I thought,” said Baroni. “I wrestled and rolled with him, and he’s hard as f--- to take down, hard to hold down. He’s a lot stronger than he looks. He looks good, fit, but he’s strong. He’s fast, he’s an athlete. He’s a f---king good athlete. That’s the most surprising thing.”

Baroni’s verve brings a positive dynamic to the camp, which seems to mesh together an equal amount of respect and drive. Everyone pitches in with their specific talents (whether it be jiu-jitsu or banging), then gets out of the way when their turn is over. Bisping’s noted work ethic hasn’t waned either.

Rogers impressive in victory at Strikeforce

Originally posted on MMAforReal.com

In the heavyweight attraction, Brett Rogers maintained his undefeated record with a stunning 22-second knockout of former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski.

Arlovski, a heavy favorite entering the night, came in with a leg kick and backed off, allowing Rogers to bulrush him against the cage. From there, a big flurry of punches turned Arlovski’s lights out for the second straight fight. In celebration, Rogers ran head-first into the fencing, a moment of pure joy.

“Hopefully (this win) bumps (my career) up to the next level,” Rogers said.

Next up for Rogers could be Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem on Aug. 15.

“I’m ready for whatever,” Rogers said. “I was planning on picking that up today but it got pushed back. Hopefully he’s keeping it good and clean for me. I’m coming for it.”

**********

In a welterweight bout, Joe Riggs dominated Phil Baroni en route to straight 30-27 scores for a unanimous decision victory.

Riggs, who claimed to have broken both hands in the fight, took Baroni down several times to win the first two rounds. Even seemingly up two rounds heading into the third, Riggs turned up the heat on a tentative Baroni, landing knees and punches and hurting his opponent. Riggs also taunted Baroni at several points during the round, leaving his chin open. Baroni landed a few good shots, but it wasn’t enough.

“He was talking some (expletive) about my chin,” Baroni said. “I wanted to show him, ‘what are you talking about? I’ve never been knocked out.’ I can take a good shot, but I think I took a little too many. I didn’t fight back.

“I wasn’t able to pull the trigger. I don’t know what happened.”

Rogers Stuns Arlovski; Riggs Dominates Baroni

Originally posted on Sherdog.com

Rogers got to Arlovski's chin.

Brett Rogers told anyone who would listen that he was going to knockout Andrei Arlovski in the first round. Not too many people believed him, but they may start listening to the undefeated heavyweight after his 22-second dismantling of the former UFC champion.

Rogers (10-0), after taking a short leg-kick, stormed in on Arlovski, backing him into the cage with a left hook that seemed to stun him. Along the cage, Rogers unleashed a combination that culminated with a right hook that separated Arlovski from consciousness.

“I felt like he was hesitating,” Rogers said. “I just went after him. I was hungry.”

The surprising win puts Rogers at the top of the list of heavyweight title contenders for Alistair Overeem’s Strikeforce crown.

“I’m going to keep it going,” Rogers said. “I love this sport. I’m ready for anybody. Most importantly, I want that title.”

Arlovski (15-8), meanwhile, will have some soul-searching to do after suffering back-to-back knockout losses.

Joe Riggs thoroughly dominated Phil Baroni from bell to bell. The veteran mixed martial artist put on clinic, utilizing all facets of the game. Baroni did well to survive the 15-minute beating.

Riggs (30-10) outwrestled Baroni in the first round, taking his back in the process. Though he could not sink the rear-naked choke, he did control the round. He kept Baroni off balance and never let the flamboyant New Yorker find his range on his feet. A frustrated and weary Baroni (13-11) could do little to muster any offense in rounds two and three, while Riggs began to tee off on the feet. He landed crushing combinations at will, swelling Baroni’s left eye in the process.

In the post-fight interview, Riggs said he thought he broke both of his hands during the bout. He also made known his wish to fight Shields, the former EliteXC welterweight champion.

Arlovski suffers "Grim" fate at Strikeforce

Originally posted on MMAJunkie.com

Nearly everyone predicted a quick finish to the heavyweight contest between Brett Rogers (10-0) and former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski (15-7). A much smaller portion of the prognosticators envisioned a win for "The Grim."

But the Minnesota-native wasted little time in proving his detractors wrong, patiently waiting through a series of feints from "Pitbull" before unleashing a series of piston-like power punches. While the first four shots missed their mark, Arlovski retreated straight back before ending up against the cage. With his motion halted, Rogers' blows found their mark.

A powerful left hook rocked the Belarusian, and a right that followed forced him limp. Another left connected to Arlovski's neck as he fell to the floor, and referee "Big" John McCarthy was there to save the former champ before Rogers could inflict any further damage. The bout was over just 22 seconds after it began, and "The Grim" described his attack as "beast-like."

"That's what happens when you work hard," Rogers said. "I wasn't feeling respected, and I've got to thank Arlovski for allowing me the chance to come out here and prove that I'm worth hanging with the boys in the top ten."

The upset win for Rogers makes him the clear-cut favorite to challenge current Strikeforce heavyweight champion at the promotion's newly announced August 15 event. A clearly disappointed Arlovski has now dropped two-straight contests.

*********

While the war of words leading up to the welterweight contest between Joe Riggs (30-10) and Phil Baroni (13-11) made it easy to anticipate a stand-up war, "Diesel" elected to work a safer strategy by dragging his opponent to the floor and attacking his historically suspect gas tank.

A few submission attempts on the floor but Baroni on the defensive, and Riggs kept the pressure on his opponent with a ground-and-pound attack.

As the third round started, Riggs elected to work more from his feet, punishing Baroni with a series of flying knees. Baroni retreated consistently through the frame, and Riggs' attack was a bit hesitant, though good enough to earn him a unanimous decision. Following the bout, an emotional Riggs explained why he wasn't quite able to earn the finish.

"I broke both my hands again," Riggs said. "I got a family to support."

The win is Riggs' second-straight, and the 26-year-old is now 3-2 fighting for Strikeforce. Baroni's loss, his first since dropping to 170 pounds, snaps a three-fight winning streak.

Riggs to Go Through Baroni to Get to Shields

Originally posted on MMAweekly.com

Joe Riggs vs. Phil Baroni promises fireworks inside the Scottrade Center in St. Louis on Saturday at the Strikeforce promoted event to air on Showtime.

It's been more than six months since Riggs last competed and the 26-year-old veteran mixed martial artist is eager to get back in action.

"I haven't fought since November. My hand has been ready to go since January. I can't wait. I really can't wait," Riggs told MMAWeekly.com. "It's been too long. After my last fight, I wanted to keep active like I used to be and then I got sidelined for awhile with an injury, so I'm ready to go."

He was originally slated to take on Jake Shields, but the fight fell through when Shields accepted a catchweight bout with No. 2 ranked middleweight Robbie Lawler instead, resulting in Riggs signing to fight Baroni.

Discussing the change in opponent, Riggs said, "It's an easier opponent. It's going to be a lot more exciting of a fight. A lot more people are probably excited about this one than me and Shields."

When the bout agreements were signed between Riggs and Baroni, the banter between the two was respectful, but that quickly changed.

"I think he's just trying to talk himself into it. I think he doubts himself a lot. He's getting older and trying to talk himself into it. That's my opinion. That's what I think he's doing," proclaimed Riggs. "He runs his mouth quite a bit, especially at the press conference he was yapping off at the mouth.

Baroni Found His Niche

Originally posted on MMAweekly.com

Phil Baroni never had trouble selling a fight, but when it came to backing up his words, there were times he couldn’t deliver.

On June 6, though, he wants to deliver for Strikeforce against Joe Riggs.

A nine-year veteran of the sport, Baroni has fought for everyone under the sun and knows how the fight game works. He knows that for the most part, it's just business, and slurs are a part of the game.

“Do I like to talk (expletive)?” he asked. “Depends on who I’m fighting. I always seem to fight (expletive).”

But he says he didn’t have control over perhaps the most important part of his business –preparation for fights. He overtrained, undertrained, neglected huge parts of preparation like, for instance, jiu-jitsu.

Baroni has racked up three quick victories since dropping from welterweight to middleweight, and says he’s turned a corner.

“Losing 16 pounds of muscle helped a lot,” said Baroni. “I never thought I could make weight, and now that I’m able to do it, I’m real excited. I feel like I’m 19 years old again. I feel young. I feel like I should be on a box of Wheaties.”

The native New Yorker is eating soy and hemp along with his usual fish and chicken; he’s not a full-blown vegetarian, but it helps him from bulking up too much.

He’s training jiu-jitsu, finally, with ace Robert Drysdale, and splits his striking work between Shawn Tompkins and Gil Martinez. The wrestlers of Xtreme Couture provide the rest.

CagePotato Exclusive: 10 Questions With Phil Baroni

Originally posted on CagePotato.com

he idea of a spiritually grounded Phil Baroni kind of freaks us out, to be honest. But the NYBA you knew as a young, brash, self-destructive middleweight is gone, and in his place is an older, wiser, fired-up welterweight who won't quit until he's a world champion. With his fight against Joe Riggs scheduled for the main card of Saturday's Strikeforce show, we called Phil yesterday to chat about sex, steroids, destiny, being reborn at 170, and what he really wants to be remembered for...

***

CAGEPOTATO.COM: So I’ve been watching some of your recent interviews — do you really believe that not having sex helps your athletic performance? I thought that was just some bullshit myth.
PHIL BARONI: Yeah, I believe it. I know it to be a fact, man, especially when it comes to taking punches. You take punches better when you abstain from, ah…punching your own loads out.

How do you explain the science behind that?
Aw man, I’m not a scientist. It makes you fuckin’ mean, I’ll tell you that much. I’m lean and mean right now. It fuckin’ works. You don’t think so, then don’t do it — you’re not a fighter anyway, so who cares?

Don’t you think your wife’s needs should come before your job?

I’ll put it this way dude, I more than make up for it when I don’t have a fight. My wife could use a break anyway. It was a lot easier when I wasn’t married; you could just bring ‘em in the room, one after another, line ‘em up, like when I was in Japan. But I’m married now, so the wife needs a break once in a while.

You’re fighting Joe Riggs on Saturday night. He told us that you might be using steroids right now. Have you ever been “pharmaceutically enhanced”?
No. Never. I wrestled in college and we got tested — there was no time in my life when I wasn’t being tested. I don’t do stuff like that. I don’t need it. Being big and strong has never been something I needed help with.

Phil Baroni (13-10) vs. Joe Riggs (29-10)

The critical question going into this fight is the status of Baroni's cardio.

Phil Baroni is infamous for starting strong and then flaming out in the first round. Much talk has centered on Baroni's newfound training regime at Xtreme Couture but opponent Joe Riggs isn't buying it, labeling his opponent ‘pharmaceuticallyy enhanced' a clear dig at Baroni's former positive steroid test.

If Baroni has in fact improved his cardio than this fight could be a three round war. Far more likely though will be a typical flameout by Baroni with Riggs winning the latter rounds.

Inside Fights Interview: Joe “The Diesel” Riggs

Originally posted on InsideFights.com

Between January of 2008 and November of that same year, Joe “Diesel” Riggs strung together a streak of eight straight victories.

However, since that streak, the once dominant Riggs could only muster a rather unimpressive record of 8-6.

Riggs feels that all of that is about to change.

Just moments into the second round, Riggs was able to end his fight against Luke Stewart with a devastating flurry of punches, walking away with a technical knockout. This may seem like just another victory, but this victory symbolizes something else for “The Diesel”.

With his most recent victory, Riggs feels he will be able to launch another dynamic winning streak. However, nothing comes easy in MMA. The same can be said for acquiring a victory over Phil Baroni.

Riggs is set to face Baroni at Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields on June 6th. While Baroni may be a daunting opponent to most, Riggs believes that this is where the winning streak begins.

“The last fight was the first one, and I am going to beat the piss out of Bironi June 6th, and make it number two,” stated Joe Riggs on his future opponent’s fate and the beginning of another dominant run for him in MMA.

Riggs is not a stranger to “beating the piss out of” his opponent. With thirteen victories coming from knockout, it is no surprise how he sees himself gaining his 30th victory.

“I am going to knock Phil Baroni out,” stated Riggs.

Lawler vs. Shields Preview & Predictions

Phil “New York Bad Ass” Baroni (13-10) vs. Joe “Diesel” Riggs (29-10) – 3X5 – 185Lbs: It's doubtful that this fight will go to the ground. Both fighters have won fights via submission, but both are known more for their striking than anything else. With that being said, Riggs has a better record and has fought better opponents, in my opinion. Plus, Baroni is just kind of a jerk, so he's got karma going against him too. Prediction: Riggs by KO.

Phil Baroni vs. Joe Riggs
After both of these men were unsuccessful at middleweight, they both dropped down to 170 to try to prove that they can still be a force in MMA. Phil Baroni lost to Joey Villasenor at the first Elite XC even on CBS back in May of 2008. After that, he dropped to welterweight and has is riding a three-fight win streak. The thing that worries people the most is that he couldn't finish the lackluster Olaf Alfanso at PFC 10. Riggs, however, has fought at welterweight for a while now and holds victories over some of the division's best, including Chris Lytle and Nick Diaz...yeah, the same Nick Diaz I was just talking about. His last fight was in November against Luke Stewart, a fight that he won via TKO in the second round. Give the inexperience of Stewart, in most people's eyes, it wasn't an impressive victory. Both men have a lot to prove in this fight. It could very well be the last time we see either one of them in a cage. As of late, Baroni has belittled Riggs, saying that he may back out of the fight when Riggs missed a media conference call. We'll soon find out if that's true at the weigh-ins. Assuming Riggs does show up, I think he'll defeat Baroni with no problem at all, grinding out a decision.

Phil Baroni Responds To Joe Riggs

Originally posted on FightLine.com

Fightline.com: How would you describe your fighting style?

Phil Baroni: I love to stop my opponent. I love to knock em' out and make them unconsciousness. I mean, I've always been a fan growing up of fighting and those were the fighters I always liked, guys that knock people out. Mike Tyson and guys like that. I've always wanted to emulate that kind of fighter and put on an amazing show.

Fightline.com: Who are some of the fighters that you look up to?

Baroni: Back in the day Mark Coleman and Frank Shamrock. A lot of guys right now, GSP is on top of his game, Josh Thompson, Gilbert Melendez, you have to love how far Kenny Florian's come, there's a lot of guys. Eddie Alvarez, Fedor is the best, by far, pound for pound. There's a ton of guys.

Fightline.com: You have a fight coming up in two days this Saturday June 6th, in St. Louis Missouri. You're fighting Joe Riggs, a man who had some unflattering things to say about you in his interview with FightLine.com (link). What are your thoughts on what he said?

Baroni: His mouth is writing checks that his ass can't cash. He's got a big mouth. I think he's talking so much now because he's scared. To be real, what's the comeback for that? The time to talk is done. The fight's been promoted already. I can't wait to get it on and show him what I've got. I don't think he's going to last . . . you know, I know he won't last. I know he ain't gonna go the distance, but the longer it lasts, the better. I'm in great shape! It's a mistake. He really has no chance to win. I've already won this fight with my training and preparation. I'm not really worried about what he has to say. I plan on taking care of my business. That's why they like to watch Phil Baroni, because I take care of my business.

Strikeforce Predictions

Originally posted on MMAtorch.com

Phil Baroni vs. Joe Riggs: This one's been heating up with both fighters hurling trash talk towards each other as the fight nears. Riggs is still upset he got passed over by Jake Shields in favor of Shields' bout with Lawler on this card and doesn't feel like Baroni's in his league. Well Baroni feels he's a different fighter at 170 lbs. and wants to beat that point into the face of Joe Riggs. This is going to be a fun brawl while it lasts and should provide a path to the next step for both fighters. Baroni's 13-10 record isn't anything special, but he's still got a lot of power in his punches and moreso now at welterweight. His strength and power are going to be what he needs to utilize to win a tough bout. Riggs is over forty fights into his professional career at the age of 26, and it has certainly taken a toll on him physically and mentally in that time. The last few years have been marred by a recurring back injury and a problem with painkillers that forced him to pull out of a bout. He's looking to get back on track and this one should be a back and forth fight on the feet. If Riggs is allowing himself to overlook Baroni because of his belief that Baroni's not on his level then he'll be brought back to Earth quickly. This is going to be a much more even fight than he's thinking it will be but if Riggs is in shape and ready for a fight he'll take a unanimous decision.

Riggs Calls out Baroni

Originally posted on 5thround.com

With their slug-fest just days away, MMA vet Joe Riggs believes that his Strikeforce: “Lawler vs. Shields” opponent, Phil Baroni, has very little confidence in his own abilities and that is why he turns to steroids.

“He always shows up in shape, looking shredded and puffed up, but I think he’ll be pharmaceutically enhanced, too,” Riggs told CagePotato.com. “Just because he doesn’t test positive for steroids doesn’t mean he’s not on them right now.”

Baroni was recently suspended by the California State Athletic Commission after he tested positive for two types of steroids, Boldenone and Stanozolol Metabolites, following his loss to Frank Shamrock at Strikeforce/EliteXC’s “Judgment Day” back in June of 2007.

Despite the embarrassment and year-long suspension, Riggs isn’t quite sure that “The New York Bad Ass” is completely clean today.

“…I don’t want to say that he’s on them for sure, because I don’t have any way of knowing that, but I do know that he’s done it in the past,” Riggs said. “I think he’s the kind of guy who relies on stuff like that because he doesn’t truly believe in himself.

Phil Baroni Talks Riggs

Originally posted on MMAunltd.com

Phil Baroni is looking to extend his unbeaten streak at welterweight and make an impact in the division. Strikeforce's champion, Jake Shields, moves up in weight to take on Robbie Lawler this Saturday due to the lack of big fights for him currently available.

This signifies a great moment for the 'New York Bad Ass' to cement his status as a contender by taking on Joe 'Diesel' Riggs on
the same card this weekend.

Regarding his possible contention, Baroni said to us, "When I beat Joe it will definitely put me in place to fight for a title."

Modestly, he also added, "But my focus is on Riggs. 'Winning takes care of everything' is what my father has always preached to me so I'm going to beat Riggs first."

The former undefeated amateur boxer and kickboxer is known for his heavy hands and spectacular knockouts, you don't have to look back very far to wins over Scott Jansen and Ron Verdadero which prove Baroni still has dynamite in his fists. That said, he is aware his opponent Riggs is also well rounded.

"I think he has a great top game and he is well rounded. His game is complete, but on top is where he is best and most dangerous."

Strikeforce Fight Week Preview: Phil Baroni Vs. Joe Riggs

Originally posted on BleacherReport.com

Breakdown

With 67 career fights between them, the word 'veteran' seems a bit weak here. Baroni is a notable hard hitter as eight of his 13 wins have come via KO, but he hasn't fought since last September, a long layoff for a guy entering his mid-30s.

That hasn't stopped him from talking a big game if you've been paying attention to any of the media surrounding him this week.

Riggs should have a bit of a chip on his shoulder as he was originally slated to fight Jake Shields, but Shields wanted a bigger fight and well, he got it. There are some concerns with Riggs' consistency as recent years have taken on a win one, lose one trend.

Baroni will have to be wary of Riggs' fists (15 KOs) and his submission skills (13 tapouts), both of which he is susceptible to. A title run seems highly improbable, but if a guy on the main card decided to skip past me, I'd be a bit pissed too.

Lawler vs. Shields Preview

Andrei Arlovski vs. Brett Rogers

Former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski faces off with Team Bison heavyweight slugger Brett Rogers. The winner of this fight will more than likely get a chance to lock horns with Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem. Don’t expect much ground work out of these two, as they will both be looking to put the other man to sleep.

Arlovski has the advantage on the feet when it comes to pure striking technique and is the faster of the two. For Rogers, he will have the strength and power advantage over the smaller Arlovski. Although unlikely, if the fight were to go to the ground, Arlovski would have the edge with his submission grappling background based in Sambo.

Arlovski has all the tangibles to win the fight and he should win the fight, but his chin will be the question mark. He was winning the fight with Fedor Emelianenko up until his chin failed him and what is there to say that it won’t happen again. Rogers has tons of power in his punches and could very well put Arlovski out. Arlovski needs to stay on the outside and use his speed to get in and out, not staying on the inside where Rogers will have his best chance to end the fight.

Phil Baroni vs. Joe Riggs

In a battle of welterweight sluggers, Las Vegas based striker Phil Baroni takes on the hard-hitting Joe Riggs. These two have had a harsh exchange of words in the weeks leading up to the fight indicating that neither will be holding back in this fight.

These two will more than likely never see any action on the ground until one of them is dazed and confused. Baroni will pack more power in his punches and will have a nice size advantage over Riggs. On the other hand, Riggs will be the much quicker fighter and will have the advantage on the ground if the fight ever gets there.

This fight is one of those guilty pleasures, as it expected that each is going to try and knock the other fighter's head off. Baroni has gone 3-0 since moving down to welterweight and seems to be where he belongs after being outsized at middleweight. Baroni will want to get on the inside and turn the fight into a brawl. That is where he does his best work. Riggs needs to stay on the outside and pick his shots. If that doesn’t work then putting Baroni on his back and pounding him from the top is his other option.

Joe Riggs Talks About Phil Baroni, His Beef With Nick Diaz, Jake Shields & Much More

Originally posted on FightLine.com

Joe Riggs talked to Rod Moyer of FightLine.com earlier this week to discuss his upcoming fight this Saturday with Phil Baroni at Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields. Riggs talked about Baroni, his beef with Nick Diaz, his time in the UFC, his disdain for Jake Shields, fighting referee Herb Dean and much more.
Fightline.com: In 2003, you fought referee Herb Dean, how is it with him now?

Joe Riggs: Yeah, in 2003, Herb was in King of the Cage. I was fighting locally in Arizona for Rage in the Cage, and him and a couple buddies came down to Phoenix and fought, and I ended up beating him up pretty bad in the first round. He still doesn’t like to referee my fights now. He’s a really good referee. He doesn’t want anyone to have complaints or a conflict of interest, or something like that, but he’s a great referee. I wish he would ref some of my fights.

Fightline.com: You have fought with a lot of organizations. I want to start and go back to your time with the UFC. You’ve fought some of the biggest names in the sport, like Matt Hughes, Nick Diaz, and Diego Sanchez while you were with them. How would you characterize your time in the UFC?

Joe Riggs: The UFC was kind of early in my career. It was, um, I wasn’t given any breaks in the UFC. I was rushed to a title shot when I wasn’t ready for one. I had a title shot when I was like 22, and just wasn’t ready for it. I went like 4?4 in the UFC. A lot of the guys that are coming up now are reeling off 5?0 records in the UFC because they're fighting nobodies, you know. I love the UFC and never have anything bad to say about them. But they never did me any favors. They gave me one easy fight. My UFC debut was against Joe Doerkson, who at the time was ranked #3 in the world. After that, Matt Hughes, Nick Diaz, Chris Lytle, Mike Swick, back-to-back tough guys, and you know, it’s tough but it’s good. When you get put though the ringer like that, you’re ready for anything.

Baroni on Riggs: ‘I’m planning on blowing right through this kid’

Originally posted on fiveouncesofpain.com

Joining Lawler and Shields on the recent Strikeforce conference call on their June 6 event was the one and only “New York Bad Ass” Phil Baroni.

Baroni, who will step into the cage against Joe “Diesel” Riggs on the televised portion of the card, made sure to remind fans of why he’s always been known as a fighter who isn’t afraid to speak his mind. Riggs found himself directly in Baroni’s crosshairs, especially in regards to his apparent absenteeism from the call.

“The guy is a no-show for the conference call,” said Baroni. “He’s got a real big problem. I’ve been telling you since day one you better have someone else lined up because I don’t think he’s going to show up. We’re all busy and we’re all training right now and we don’t want to do this but we’re all big and professional except that (expletive). It’s up to him how long the fight is going to last. I want to show everyone in MMA that I’m for real. All roads lead through Joe Riggs. I’m planning on blowing right through this kid.”

The outspoken Long Islander, who is 3-0 since making the move down to 170 pounds, made it clear he’s going to be especially agitated on Saturday night and it will have nothing to do with cutting weight.

Strikeforce Preview Part 1

Originally posted on Sherdog.com

Phil Baroni vs. Joe Riggs

The Breakdown: Because every card needs a guaranteed dogfight, Strikeforce delivers the always articulate Baroni (13-10) into battle with Riggs, a division-hopping regular. Don’t look for any world-class grappling, but count on both men coming in ready to go for broke on the feet. The difference is that Riggs (29-10, 1 NC) can back up his stand-up bombs with his always dangerous ground-and-pound, an advantage that will play heavily in his favor the longer this fight goes.

The X Factor: Neither fighter is known for his gas tank, and if we don’t get an early knockout, someone is bound to start sucking wind. Once that happens, it comes down to who can summon up the juice to gut out a win. Flip a coin, and hope you didn’t bet on whoever gets laid out.

Riggs thinks Baroni likes the (other) sauce

Originally posted on ESPN.com/Sherdog.com

The always-entertaining CagePotato.com is stirring the pot in anticipation of Saturday's Joe Riggs-Phil Baroni bout, quoting Riggs as saying he believes Baroni benefits from some sort of chemical assistance.

"He always shows up in shape, looking shredded and puffed up, but I think he'll be pharmaceutically enhanced, too," Riggs said. "Just because he doesn't test positive for steroids doesn't mean he's not on them right now. … I think if he is -- and I'm not saying for sure that he is -- but the classic sign of a guy like that is, he comes out hard and then poops out fast."

PHIL BARONI TALKS JOE RIGGS w/Cagewriter and ESPNRadio1100

BENT: Previewing Strikeforce on Showtime - Phil Baroni vs. Joe Riggs

Originally posted on MMAtorch.com

Our second bout of the evening is a welterweight fight which should be more than entertaining for as long as it shall last. In this match up we have two fighters who are known commodities to most MMA fans, and especially so to the older ones who are more likely to have witnessed the exploits of these two men when they were considered to be in their prime or at least viable contenders. Strikeforce benefits from the name value of this bout as both men competed extensively in the UFC, and the fact that these two have talked a great game in the weeks leading up to this bout will not hurt anything at all.

The term "crossroads bout" gets bandied about a lot, and I am certainly guilty of declaring many a fight to be just that, but this is the true definition of the term as neither man will have an easy time rebounding from a loss in this one. Baroni is looking to prove that he is in fact a brand new fighter in competing in the welterweight division, and Riggs has a lot to prove as he has repeatedly stated that he should have been the one facing Jake Shields in the main event and not Lawler. Riggs is considerably younger than Baroni in terms of age, but one would have to say that the "New York Bad Ass" has less miles on him and is arguably the fresher of the two. When you take into account all of the back problems and associated maladies that Riggs has faced and compare that against some of the punishment Baroni has eaten, one cancels the other out in some respect; but it is Baroni who comes in looking like the younger of the two and having the better chance of fighting like it.

Joe Riggs Talks "Boring" Jake Shields, "Enhanced" Phil Baroni, + More

Originally posted on CagePotato.com

As promised yesterday, here is the full interview with Joe Riggs, who opens up about his past painkiller addiction, his ongoing attempts to get Jake Shields into the cage with him, and of course, the possibly “pharmaceutically enhanced” Phil Baroni who he’ll meet in Strikeforce on Showtime this Saturday night.

Cage Potato: Thanks for talking with me, Joe. You’re fighting Phil Baroni this weekend, but I think we all know that’s not the fight you wanted. You were pretty adamant about trying to get a fight with Jake Shields.

Riggs: Yeah, that was a fight that I’ve been trying to get for a couple years now and he’s managed to squeak his way out of it every time we were supposed to fight. This time contracts were signed and everything was ready to go and he just wormed his way out of it. He’s the type of guy who just wants to fight the fights where the match-ups are stylistically in his favor. I think he also wants fights, like this one [against Robbie Lawler] where if things don’t go his way he has excuses.

You think he felt you were a bad match-up for him, stylistically?

Yeah, and if he loses to me it makes him look bad. If he loses to Lawler he can say he’s fighting out of his weight class and he has a bunch of excuses for it.

You seemed to take it pretty personally when he didn’t want to fight you.

I did because he keeps saying that the reason he won’t fight me is because he wants to fight the top guys in the world, acting like I’m not relevant in this sport. His last three fights, I’m ranked well above those opponents. It’s stupid, man. He’s acting like I’m Tank Abbott or something.

One of the things you said was that people forget you’re only 26. And you’re right, I know I thought you were older because you’ve been around in this sport for so long. You must run into that a lot.

Oh, for sure. I had a title shot in the UFC at a young age. I’ve had a lot of fights already in this sport, a lot of big fights early. Sometimes when that happens people don’t realize how young you are. They just think that since you’ve been fighting for a while you must be older. I’m not. I’m still a young guy and I’ve just done more and competed more than most fighters my age. People forget that.

Strikeforce Spotlight Interview: Phil Baroni - "I'm focused, clear headed and ready to be the champion I was born to be"

Originally posted on MMAtorch.com

Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields comes to us on June 6, 2009 from the Scotttrade Center in St. Louis, MO and can be seen live on Showtime. This is an outstanding MMA card that is quite frankly the best non-UFC card in some time in my humble opinion. This card has star power, notable names, quality match ups and a main event which is more than worthy of being so.

When you think of everything Elite XC did wrong it is refreshing to see many of their fighters get the chance to ply their trade for a promotion which actually knows what they are doing in Strikeforce.

Fighters fight.

One of those fighters who embodies that statement is the "New York Bad Ass" Phil Baroni. Baroni who has been successfully campaigning at welterweight for some time now will get a test of sorts when he steps in to do battle against the ever dangerous and durable, Joe "Diesel" Riggs.

These two men do not care for each other, and this of course was exacerbated by Riggs' anger over not fighting Jake Shields. Riggs was to face Shields, but this was of course before Jake had the opportunity to take on Robbie Lawler at a catchweight of 182 lbs. The fight with Lawler is simply a bigger fight for Shields and one which shall bring him a much bigger payday than would have been the case had he fought Riggs. Joe Riggs took this personally and has let his frustrations become known as he has intimated that facing Baroni is a huge step down and is possibly even beneath him.

The only way he can prove this is to be victorious in his bout on June 6 and in Phil Baroni he will be facing a hungry welterweight slugger with true knockout power and possibly a big chip on his shoulder. Baroni is the type of fighter who looks to knock everyone out, but now there just might be a little something extra on each of those punches as he gets the chance to show Joe Riggs just what he can do.

One man will definitely be beneath the other after this fight, but it is likely that this will mean one is in a supine position and have nothing to do with rankings of any sort. This Riggs vs. Baroni fight is a fan's fight for sure, and certainly stands out as one of the more compelling bouts on the card.

Phil Baroni Is Back

Originally posted on BleacherReport.com

On June 6, 2009 in St. Louis, Missouri at Scottrade Center, Strikeforce will host another solid MMA fight card that promises fireworks as usual.

One bout, however, could generate more hype, action and an exciting finish worthy of stealing the show. That fight, in my opinion is ‘The New York Bad Ass’, Phil Baroni versus Joe ‘Diesel’ Riggs.

If you break this fight down from the roots on up, it is already a great match up on paper. Both men have a body of work that qualifies them as experienced. Both have fought in the UFC, in addition to various other promotions, since embarking upon their MMA careers.

Both Baroni and Riggs have fought successfully, many times, at a weight that is heavier than the 170 lb. contest they are about to do.

It is also very difficult to peer at the records of both Riggs and Baroni and say who has fought the bigger names, holds the bigger wins, as both of them can make a case in those categories. Riggs lost to Wesley Diego Sanchez, yet holds a win over a younger Nick Diaz.

Phil Baroni’s record shows a loss to the likes of Frank Shamrock but also a KO win over Ryo Chonan, the last man to legitimately defeat Anderson Silva (Yushin Okami holds a DQ win over Silva shortly after).

So if being seasoned isn’t a major factor in this fight, and age really isn’t either, then what is?

Phil Baroni looks to steam roll through Joe Riggs

On June 6, “The New York Bad Ass” Phil Baroni will meet Joe “Diesel” Riggs.

Bother fighters are veterans of the sport. The fight should be a stand up battle, as both fighters are heavy handed.

Phil Baroni was pretty explicit about his plan to knock Riggs out at the Strikeforce press conference yesterday.

“Really, there’s not much to say. Joe’s 25 years old and he’ll have his day. On June 6, I’m knocking him the (expletive) out. I’m going to (expletive) him up bad. I’m going to bust him up the whole (expletive) fight. It’s up to him how long he wants to last. Whether he wants to last one round or he wants to last three – I’m going to (expletive) him up.”

Thursday Blog: Flawless UFC Victories -- Part IV

Originally posted on Sherdog.com

By Loretta Hunt (lhunt@sherdog.com)
Thursday, 5:05 p.m. ET: I was as surprised as anyone when Strikeforce suddenly added a bonus matchup between heavyweights Andrei Arlovski and Brett Rogers to their June 6 event at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. You hear a lot of rumors in the biz –- no secret stays one for long -- but this was a big one that seemed to slip through the cracks.

That is until I heard the deal had been masterminded in the wee hours that Tuesday morning.

I love last-minute deals –- it’s just another perk of this unpredictable sport. So, I asked Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker how it all went down.

“This fight was supposed to be between Alistair Overeem and Brett Rogers, and then Alistair hurt his hand in the last seven days, we were waiting to see if his hand was going to heal or if he was supposed to come out [to the U.S.],” Coker said Tuesday. “It turns out that he could not, so Brett Rogers was left without an opponent. At that time, the opportunity for Andrei Arlovski to fight on our card appeared on our doorstep, and we thought it would be a great fight with him and Brett.”

With a main event between the Terminator that is Robbie Lawler against jiu-jitsu ace Jake Shields, as well as the scraps that will likely be Nick Diaz versus Scott Smith and Phil Baroni trading blows with Joe Riggs, I hardly thought this card needed an extra boost.

Phil Baroni fights with heart and heavy hands

Originally posted on FiveKnuckles.com

Phil Baroni is one of the most colorful and enigmatic fighters in all of MMA. The former professional kickboxer, collegiate wrestler and amateur boxer has made a name for himself as a knockout artist who isn't afraid to stand and trade shots. He's also both endeared and angered fans with his flashy ring entrances and boastful post fight comments.

For better or worse, Baroni has endured a rollercoaster ride through the landscape of MMA frought with debilitating lows, but always with the will to hold on knowing that another high was just around the bend.

Baroni dropped down to welterweight last year after suffering a three fight losing streak at middleweight. Three fights later he finds himself undefeated (3-0) in the weight class and has been very impressive in all three outings.

FiveKnuckles.com cought up with Baroni over email to discuss a number of issues including; the ups and downs of his MMA career, his upcoming fight with Joe Riggs, and his recent move to the middleweight division where he's enjoyed a career resurgence.

FiveKnuckles.com: You've fought for most of your career as an undersized middleweight. Many had suggested that you could be better suited for welterweight and you finally made the switch going 3-0 at the weight and have looked very impressive in the process. What made you finally decide to make the move to welterweight?

Phil Baroni: Really I wish somebody would have told me earlier. I wasted my prime fighting against some of the worlds best middleweights. The reason I cut was something had to give. I new in my heart I was much better than my record. All the close losses against a lot of middleweight champions and top five guys was killing me inside. I just could not break through. I had to change something.

FiveKnuckles.com: Whenever people count you out, you seem to always come back strong with a winning streak. It happened when you left the UFC for Japan and now it's happening again with the move to welterweight. Do you get motivated by adversity to prove people wrong?

Phil Baroni: (Expletive) yeah I do. I'm a fighter. Fighters fight. They fight through adversity and find a way to succeed.

FiveKnuckles.com: A lot has been said of your upcoming fight with Joe Riggs. He's come out and said that he doesn't understand the match up and seems to be looking past you in the same way he complained about being looked over by Jake Shields. What are your thoughts on that and your message to Joe Riggs?

Phil Baroni: He will find out when they lock us in the cage together. I'm nobody to overlook or take lightly. I need this win bad and I will fight like I do. He is a kid. He'll have a lot more opportunities after I KO him.

A Biased Fan's Report: The Top Five Most Entertaining Fighters of All Time

Originally posted on BleacherReport.com

No. 5—James “Mega Punk” Thompson

You can say a lot about this fighter: some good, some bad. The one thing you can never say is that he’s boring to watch.

From the moment he enters the arena, he electrifies the crowd. I’ve seen it. I’ve felt it. It's like a superhero just walked into the place. Japanese fans tend to think of him as some sort of superhero. A Mega Man capable of anything. They even created a You-tube video describing him as just that: a hero of the people.

This man walks out and into the arena, shaking in anticipation as one of the five most entertaining fighters of all time. He can barley control his rage, as he steps into the ring- never taking his eyes off his victim….er opponent.

When the bell rings it's on, and he’s across the mat in seconds, eager to engage his opponent and do whatever it takes to dismantle his opposition. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

Regardless, he’s a thrill and a half.

Bas Rutten is quoted as saying he wouldn’t feel safe around this guy unless he had a baseball bat. I think that says enough right there. James Thompson, with the proper camp and promotion, could rule the world of MMA.

No. 3—Phil “The New York Badass” Baroni

Say whatever you like, Phil was "Da man." His fight against Minowa 1 was one of the greatest fights of all time. The way he entered an arena would make any NY’er proud. “Im the best, so bleep on it!”

Walking in and wearing a slick robe and a Yankee emblem on his hoo-ha, he was ready to crush heads. In Bushido he reached his peak, dismantling every ace they had.

People have pretty bad opinions of this guy, but he was damn fun to watch, and he represented and gets credit for that.

Strikeforce: "Diesel" confident against Baroni, but Shields ultimate target

Originally posted on MMAjunkie.com

Still one month out from his June 6 Strikeforce showdown with Phil Baroni (13-10) in St. Louis, Joe Riggs (29-10) is ready.

He's ready for Baroni. He's ready to perform. And he's ready for a chance to shut Jake Shields' (22-4-1) mouth.

"I wouldn't be starting this stuff, but as a professional fighter, you get offered to fight someone, you fight them regardless," Riggs recently told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). "Unless you have a legitimate reason you don't want to fight them. Then [Shields] is going to say that I'm beneath him? [Expletive] that mother[expletive]."

Riggs had been preparing to fight Shields, but the organization instead decided to match the former EliteXC welterweight champion up with the former EliteXC middleweight champion Robbie Lawler. That bout will serve as the evening's main event.

Riggs was angered by what he perceived as a lack of respect on Shields' part for not taking the bout. Riggs doubts Shields skillset, and he hopes to prove his point in the very near future.

Riggs vs. Baroni on Tap for June 6 Strikeforce

Originally posted on MMAweekly.com

A welterweight contest between Joe Riggs and Phil Baroni is in the books for the second Showtime-televised Strikeforce on June 6 in St. Louis.

Riggs confirmed the fight during a recent appearance on MMAWeekly Radio, and Baroni followed on Tuesday. An announcement from Strikeforce is expected in the coming days.

The bout was a popular “what-if” fight amongst hard-core fans in the heyday of their UFC careers.

Baroni faces his stiffest challenge yet since dropping to the welterweight division in 2008 on the heels of three consecutive losses. The “New York Bad Ass” has racked up three wins as a welterweight, most recently a decision win over Olaf Alfonso at Palace Fighting Championships 10. He carries an overall professional record of 13-10.

The hard-hitting fighter hopes a fourth win will put him at the top of Strikeforce’s recently expanded division.

“Riggs is a test, and it’s an important fight for me,” said Baroni. “I’ve got to be prepared.”

To put it mildly, Riggs was none too happy about a shift in opponents that took him from a proposed match-up with Jake Shields on Strikeforce’s April 11 card, but thought Baroni was a good change.

Joe Riggs vs Phil Baroni possible for June StrikeForce card

Originally posted on UrDirt.com

After having his April 11 StrikeForce match-up with Jake Shields getting taken off, there was still a possibility that Joe Riggs would still get another opponent in time for the event. Instead, the San Jose based promotion decided to add Heavyweight Brett Rogers into the card to face Ron Humphries and now leaving Riggs completely off the April Showtime event. However; it is very possible that Riggs will be added to the network’s second StrikeForce card in the month of June where he will now face Phil Baroni up in St.Louis, Missouri.

Sources close to the situation have told MMAWeekly.com’s Insider Blog that the bout was offered to both fighters, but nothing has yet been finalized at this time.

Riggs who was originally scheduled to meet Jake Shields on April 11 will now be headlining the June StrikeForce card against Robbie Lawler in a Middleweight bout and as for the “Diesel” he was victorious in his last fight for the promotion back in the month of November when he gained a first round TKO win over Luke Stewart in his first fight back at Welterweight.

Meanwhile; Baroni changed it around after also making the cut to 170 pounds has reeled off three straight wins of his own and has not fought since October where he fought for the Palace Fighting Championship where he picked up the victory over Olaf Alonso where he picked up the decision.

Riggs vs. Baroni or Rogers vs. TBA to complete April 11 Showtime card

Originally posted on MMAjunkie.com

A middleweight bout between Joe Riggs (29-10) and Phil Baroni (13-10), or a heavyweight bout between Brett Rogers (8-0) and an as-yet-undetermined heavyweight, will take the final spot on the April 11 "Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Diaz" Showtime-televised main card.

********

Riggs is 4-2 since leaving the UFC after a December 2006 decision loss to Diego Sanchez and most recently defeated Luke Stewart via second-round TKO. Baroni is 3-0 since a three-fight losing skid he endured from 2007-2008.

Rogers, meanwhile, is a perfect 8-0, and all eight of his victories have come via first-round stoppage due to strikes. He went 3-0 in EliteXC (with wins over Ralph Kelly, James Thompson and Jon Murphy) before the organization's eventual collapse.

Rogers was one of the more than 40 EliteXC fighters that Strikeforce picked up with a recent purchase of EliteXC assets.

Phil Baroni Signs Two Show Commentary Deal with MMA Big Show

Press Release:

March 5th, 2009 Cincinnati, OH: The MMA Big Big Show confirmed the "New York Bad Ass" Phil Baroni to perform color commentary in tandem with Fox Sports' Jeff Piecoro on March 7th and April 11th at the Belterra Casino Resort & Spa.

The roles of hero and villain have long been prevalent and added a theatric effect to the world of professional sports. Simply put, there are athletes that fans love and others that the public simply loves to hate.

The name Phil Baroni resides somewhere in a grey area when it comes to characterizing the public's perception of the 30-year-old boxer and wrestler. Boisterous and outspoken, the self proclaimed "New York Badass" is seen as cocky and disrespectful by some, but as a passionate inspiration by others who feel they identify with him.

A graduate of Central Michigan University, Baroni wrestled for his alma mater while pursuing a bachelor's degree in psychology. Before making his debut in the sport of mixed martial arts, Baroni put together undefeated records in both boxing where he was victorious in twelve consecutive bouts and kickboxing where he reeled off seven straight wins.

Baroni has built his legendary name and persona throughout his career in the UFC, PRIDE and Elite XC and on March 7th and April 11th he will call the MMA Big Show home.

The MMA Big Show is very excited to have Phil Baroni on board with us as we venture into television while developing the future stars of MMA.

Baroni out, War Machine in at XMMA 7

Originally posted on MMAjunkie.com

Canadian based XMMA has suffered a few high-profile casualties for its Feb. 27 event, "Inferno," but the organization has responded quickly by adding another much-discussed athlete to the card.

Phil Baroni (13-10) and Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos (6-1) have been scratched from the "XMMA 7: Inferno" in Montreal, while controversial welterweight War Machine (6-2) has stepped in on two weeks' notice.

...........

Baroni's contract was also recently acquired by Strikeforce, and the "New York Bad Ass" announced on the Underground, a popular mixed martial arts message board, that he would be fighting for the organization in an as-yet-unannounced May event in Seattle.

Stepping in for Baroni on short notice for the bout with undefeated Guillaume de Lorenzi (5-0) is the always-entertaining War Machine.

The oft-discussed War Machine, recently known as much for his ranting MySpace postings, controversial opinions and outside of the cage activities, will look to build on a November 2008 knockout win over David Anderson.

War Machine was recently cut from the soon-to-debut Bellator Fighting Championships, reportedly for his controversial statements regarding President Barack Obama. The 27-year-old has since apologized for the remarks and has now signed with Ken Pavia and MMAagents.com as he looks to rebuild a once-promising career.

Baroni Positive Regarding UFC Return

Originally posted on FightersOnlyMagazine.com

Phil Baroni hopes to make his return to the UFC later this year, if he can get the all-clear from his contract with ProElite.

“I’d like to be fighting in the UFC. Its where I think I want to be. Fighting for Strikeforce is pretty good and so is Japan but I just want to be back on the big stage and not be a journeyman anymore,” he told Fighters Only.

“But I cant really sign with a big show until this ProElite bullshit ends. Its really crappy for us guys signed to ProElite because we can’t sign a multi-fight deal with another show until we see what happens. Hopefully by April I will know.”

David Loiseau - A couple of wins since leaving the UFC and Loiseau finds himself knocking on the UFC door again. He may be signed for the next Canada card, but he may need one more win. Nevertheless, look for the former number 1 contender to be given another chance.

Welterweights

Phil Baroni - He is re-invented at 170 lbs. In a recent interview with FiveOuncesofPain Baroni said he would like to be in the UFC in 2009. I think he could get a chance. He may need one or two more wins though. Baroni has said he is tired of being a “journeyman” which means he may want to fight for a US based organization.

Refocused at 170 pounds, Phil Baroni seeks return to UFC

Originally posted on MMAjunkie.com

Never one to shy away from putting on a show, the always-entertaining Phil Baroni (13-10 MMA, 3-5 UFC) is seeking a return to the biggest stage in MMA.

"I'm hoping (to return to) the UFC," Baroni recently told TAGG Radio (www.taggradio.com), the official radio partner of MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "That's where I'd like to fight. That's the biggest show right now. That's where you want to be if you're fighting in America right now. That's where I want to fight."

And while "The New York Bad Ass" left the UFC in 2005 on a four-fight losing streak, the 32-year-old believes this time would be a different story.

"In training, I've seen [my improved conditioning] a lot," Baroni said. "Sparring with guys like (Josh) Koscheck and (Jon) Fitch and (Mike) Swick at AKA, I used to get tired by the third five-minute round. And now I'm doing five, five-minute rounds with those guys. My shape is better."

Baroni credits his improved performance and outlook on a decision to drop from middleweight to 170 pounds.

Fans Clamor for Baroni-Belfort Match

By: Sean Frank MMAagents.com

Talks on the Sherdog forum and mmasync.com suggest that the fans would love to see a fight between the "New York Badass" Phil Baroni and Vitor "The Phenom" Belfort. Belfort is currently scheduled to face Matt Lindland at 185 lbs on Affliction's upcoming PPV card. The NYBA is undefeated at his new weight class of 170 lbs. Although this would be an exciting fight with potential fireworks, I see Baroni sticking at 170 lbs. Who knows though? Maybe one day they can meet at a catch weight or maybe The Phenom will drop another weight class down to welterweight.

Top 10 Greatest Rivalries in the UFC include Baroni's Fued with Team Quest

Originally posted on BleacherReport.com

7. Phil Baroni vs Team Quest

Let's face it, Phil Baroni doesn't like alot of people but he HATES everybody from Team Quest. At UFC 34, Phil Baroni fought against Team Quest member Matt Lindland and lost by unanimous decision. Both men were scheduled for a rematch at UFC 41 and Matt "The Law" Lindland won by unanimous decision again.

At UFC 45, "The New York Bad Ass" had a fight with another Team Quest member, Evan Tanner. There was alot of controversy surrounding the first fight. Baroni was dominating the fight and cut Tanner in the face.

The ref stopped the fight for the medics to check it out and Tanner was able to get his head back together and came back to dominate Phil Baroni. The ref asked Baroni if he wanted him to stop the fight and Phil said yes.

Baroni was pissed when the fight was stopped cause he actually heard "Are you ok?". Out of anger, Baroni pushed the ref and was suspended for his actions.

He returned at UFC 48 and fought Tanner in a rematch and loss a decision. Phil's record against Team Quest is not too good (0-4) and Baroni has said a million time's on TV and in interviews that he hated any member of Team Quest and that his rivalry with them would probably continue forever.

Strikeforce looks to match Phil Baroni and Duane Ludwig in early 2009

Originally posted on MMAjunkie.com

After delivering some payback in a long-awaited rematch with Sam Morgan earlier this month, Duane Ludwig is likely to bang with Phil Baroni (13-10) next.

The 30-year-old Ludwig (17-8) lived up to his "Bang" nickname in the fight against Morgan at "Strikeforce: Payback" on Oct. 3, wasting little time in punching out the former "The Ultimate Fighter 2" contestant in round one. The outcome evened the ledger between Ludwig and Morgan at a win apiece. Morgan upset the Colorado native in his home state in 2005.

It was a much-needed victory for Ludwig, who has struggled while fighting for Strikeforce. He’s now 2-3 in the promotion and appears headed for an opportunity to trade shots with Baroni.

"We're going to try to put him and Baroni together," Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said. "Since they're so close in weight now, we should definitely put that fight together at 170 (pounds). They should fight either in Denver or Seattle."

Baroni was scheduled to be on the "Strikeforce: Payback" card, as well, to face James Martinez. However, the former PRIDE and UFC fighter suffered an eyelid cut during a unanimous-decision victory over Olaf Alfonso in a Palace Fighting Championship bout on Sept. 26. The cut required stitches, forcing Baroni off the show.

The Reeducation of Phil Baroni

Originally Posted on MMArated.com

I remember seeing Phil Baroni at the post-fight press conference following his devastating loss to Joey Villasenor at the May 31st EliteXC on CBS show in Newark, NJ, looking like a beaten, deflated man. Without a doubt, "The New York Badass" had been anticipating this homecoming of sorts for quite some time and was disappointed in his performance. In fact, Baroni looked almost embarrassed. Losing in 71 seconds can do that to a man.

I also remember watching Baroni address the media at the press conference with his lips quivering and eyes tearing up. I truly thought he was about to call it quits right then and there. The former UFC and PRIDE FC fighter even pulled out a prepared speech thanking everyone from his parents to his mentor, Mark Coleman. Clearly, I thought, this was the end of the road for the now 10-10 fighter.

But then Baroni surprised us all by stating he had no plans to hang up his gloves anytime soon.

"I got a lot of fight left in me," Baroni said. "I've been down before and I just want an opportunity to prove myself again. I'll do whatever I've got to do."

Fighters often promise to do "whatever I've got to do" following a tough loss, but they usually just return their same old self. Not Phil Baroni. In the last four months, he has actually stayed true to his word and reinvented himself.

Since the Villasenor loss, Baroni has dropped down to welterweight and won three fights in a row - most recently this past Friday night against Olaf Alfonso at Palace Fighting Championship 10. Amazingly, Baroni is scheduled to fight again this Friday night at Strikeforce: "Payback" in Broomfield, CO, versus James Martinez, however, a cut sustained during the Alfonso fight may force him out.

Regardless, Baroni has shown us his true colors. He hated the thought of being labelled a .500 fighter and has quickly worked to move his record to 13-10. Sure, he hasn't faced the toughest opponents out there, but this wasn't the time to test himself against the best. Another loss and Baroni may have been forced to continue his career in local shows with very little pay to show for it.

He has even shown a refreshing amount of humility since the Villasenor loss.
